Japandaman’s goodies, Otaku happenings and light bikes

Wow…it’s been a while since my last post, I’ve just been so into my new duties over at Otaku Fuel. First up, in case you don’t know, I’m now writing product reviews for them and am also their blog contributor, two things that are keeping me very busy and very happily so I must add! Otaku Fuel are a US based site that specialise in anime, manga, cosplay accessories, in fact anything and everything J-pop culture related…they’re a superior site with an excellent product range. Look up their site and Facebook page and while you’re there, check out their merch, links are above ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve also decided to take some pics of my small but growing Otaku collection for everyone to see, pics below with some descriptions ๐Ÿ™‚

A peek at my manga, Bleach and Vampire Knight and the Death Note Collection Vol. 1, Ryu from a gatcha machine, Mario and Spider-Bear!

My 3DS and Psp Go living peacefully together, my CD collection (J-Pop and OST’s), my magazines are just showing.

My Japanese magazines collection. Dengeki Games on the left which unfortunately has been discontinued. The Playstation and Famitsu Weekly magazines were purchased in Japan when we were there. The Dengeki’s and other magazines were purchased from Kanga Kanga, a Japanese magazine/book importer based in downtown Melbourne. Taka-san runs the place and is very friendly and extremely knowledgeable so pay him a visit and have a look at what he has on offer, there’s heaps for everyone!! The Kanga Kanga site has address details, keep up to date with his blog, Twitter and Facebook page ๐Ÿ™‚

Ryu, Mario and a Nintendog!

Spider-Man 2 bobble head which was a present from my stepsons quite a few birthdays ago.

And one of my most prized possessions, the Premium Package of Metal Gear Solid which I purchased when we were in Japan from Super Potato Akihabara. Great site here which has a walk through the store which is extremely rare and shows you what to expect. Having been there twice I can vouch for the store and say that as far as retro goes, it’s the best in the land. Great place to find rare items or gaming goodies that were never released in Australia.

That’s all for now but I will take some pics of my figures and post them up soon as well. Final Fantasy and Death Note figures only for now but am hoping to change that soon when I have my coins in my pocket!! ๐Ÿ™‚

And lastly, the vid below is what awaited me when I left work this evening. Riders on light bikes performing tricks, how cool, right?

See you all soon and thanks for sticking around! ๐Ÿ™‚

Review: Death Note 1 Live Action Movie

Death Note live action movie supplied by Otaku Fuel.

One of the most popular animes to come out of Japan, Death Note, has been immortalised in two live action movies. The first movie simply called Death Note was a box office smash knocking The Da Vinci Code off the top spot in the Japanese theatres. This review will look at the DVD itself and the production value behind it. But first, for the uninitiated, a brief background into the Death Note story. It revolved around an A grade student called Light Yagami who is bored academically as he feels there are no more challenges to really test him. This all changes the day he finds a Death Note belonging to a death god or shinigami called Ryuk who also happens to bored with life in the shinigami realm. The Death Note has the power to kill anyone by writing their name in the book while picturing that person’s face. Light decides he can change the world by eliminating the criminals with Ryuk as his mentor and guide. Top detective, L, decides to take on the challenge of bringing the unknown killer to justice thus beginning a cat and mouse game between the two brilliant minds of Light and L.

The movie has been handled with precision directing under the instruction ofย Shลซsuke Kaneko who directed both Death Note movies. Anyone familiar with the anime or manga will love the way this well loved favourite has been handled as the film moves along at a cracking pace never letting the viewer out of its grasp. Visually the movie is beautiful to look at as the stylised feel of the anime has been transferred to the screen in an accurate and sublime manner that can be so rare of anime to live action transfers. The actors portraying L and Light have been extremely well cast and play a thrilling game of good versus evil that makes viewing this movie an absolute must.

Moving onto the extras, there’s a couple of humourous clips where the two main leads gave press interviews and they were playing it up for the cameras by talking over each other and getting in the way of each other as they were answering their questions, funny stuff. Production diaries, a clip of a special viewing in Japan, meeting the audience in Japan and a picture gallery round off the movie related extras. There’s the usual assortment of trailers and tv spots that are worth watching and of course there’s always the random selection of other anime’s that Viz Media are plugging. All in all, still worth watching and checking out when you’re done with the movie.

Two thumbs up for this movie and a must view for any anime fan wanting to extend their Death Note experience, highly recommended and a must buy.

Mixing and looping…

Those of you out there will know that I love to play with music and especially love my old school RnB, such as Bobby Brown, New Edition, Jade and so on. But the times they be changing so music must also evolve as do the dj’s that bring this music to the people. For the past 8 or so months, I’ve been playing with a music mixing program for both Windows and Mac called Mixmeister. Now I know purists out there will only believe that true mixing is on vinyl and vinyl only. They won’t even accept cd’s and mp3’s as a new age medium. And to them I say elitist snobs ๐Ÿ™‚ But in all seriousness, bottom line is I don’t have the room or the cash to buy such equipment unfortunately so until that comes around, software mixing it is, despite the limitations that come with it.

I have cranked out a few mixes from the old school which I’ve previously put on the interwebs and will do so again on this blog but for now I will put a link below to my latest mixing effort which I’ve called Beats by L ๐Ÿ™‚ First of all, a quick word about the actual music, it’s mainly current chart topping RnB with some past hits and some faster tempo dance tracks here and there just to give it constant beats to keep the feet moving! It’s a mix that took about 1 week to complete from selecting tracks to fine tuning the mixes and then volume and bass levels. Hopefully it’s complete and I’ve picked up on everything, occasionally a glitch slips through the cracks here and there but I’d like to think that I put a lot of work into this mix. Now the title…Beats by L. What does it mean and why that name? Well, I’m a huge fan of the Beats by Dre product range and can’t wait til I have my own headphones but until then I thought I’d give it a name that relates to my interests and likes. And who’s L? Well another of my passions is anime, I love it so much I have an @nime tattoo when I was in Japan! Excessive maybe but it looks good ๐Ÿ™‚ L is a major character from an extremely popular anime called Death Note. Follow the links to find more info on both L and Death Note. Being my favourite character I thought there’d be no other way to bring together two of my interests, hence Beats by L was born!

Not the crazy anime!!

Ok, so I’ve been trying to find anime for my wife that we can watch together but she’s a not a big fan of the “crazy moments” in anime where the characters just have random moments of crazy behaviour, think Bleach or Naruto or even Xxxholic. See video below for point of reference…I don’t mind them and am used to seeing them but my wife…not a fan.

As another point of reference, she absolutely loved Death Note! Dark, psychological drama with zero crazy moments, just a tight script with awesome characters and excellent pacing. We loved it so much that we ended up buying all three live action movies and watched those as well ๐Ÿ™‚ Another one that we’ve just got into on crunchyroll.com is Bombshells From The Sky which can have those “crazy moments” as well but they’re woven so well into the script that they’re forgivable and don’t seem as random as the other animes. It’s a cute romantic comedy with feline humanoids from space…what’s not to love?!?

So what I’m going to do is start another page on this blog which will hopefully help other people along the same path who are after anime without the random crazy moments! If anyone wants to email me or comment on this post with suggestions for animes, that’d be muchly appreciated as well ๐Ÿ™‚
